Professional Career

Ian Cloete is the President of the International University in Germany and Professor of Computational Intelligence in the School of Information Technology. Formerly, he was Vice President (Research July 2005 to April 2006) and Dean of the School of Information Technology from 2001 to 2003. Before joining the International University, he was with the Department of Computer Science, University of Stellenbosch, South Africa and worked at the National Accelerator Centre, where he was responsible for software development of the computer control system of a 200MeV separated-sector cyclotron facility.

He is an international member of MiLeS, Media and Life Science Computing Laboratory of the Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen Graduate School, China, a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a member of the International Neural Network Society (INNS). He served on the editorial boards of several scientific journals, including the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, Neurocomputing and the South African Computer Journal, and currently serves the international journal of Soft Computing: A Fusion of Foundations, Methodologies and Applications and the International Journal of Hybrid Intelligent Systems.

He regularly serves on the Programme Committees of various international conferences, such as the European Conference on Machine Learning (ECML/PKDD) and the IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man and Cybernetics (SMC). He is chairman (2006, 2007) of the Neural Networks Technical Committee of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, of which he has been a member since 1994, and which assists the society in making decisions on conferences, tutorials, publications, awarding distinctions, educational issues, standards, and other relevant items vital for the success of the neural networks field. He has been an invited keynote speaker at several conferences, and recently held the keynote address at the International Conference on Knowledge Sharing and Collaborative Engineering (KSCE 2006).

Research Interests include
  • Machine learning and data mining
  • Knowledge-based neurocomputing
  • Computational intelligence
  • Algorithm implementations and (industrial) applications of this technology

Professor Cloete's research group is a member of KDNet, the Knowledge Discovery Network of Excellence.
